Sadly, tragically, it goes even beyond the contraceptive mentality. If it were that alone our battle would be an easy one, as we could simply put the health risks of such behaviors and everyone would follow. It is the abundance of misinformation out there by groups like planned parenthood who tell those considering abortion to *don't call it a baby say mass of cells*. It is also the mentality of it feels good worry about later another time...It is the mentality of not considering consequence and it starts at childhood...Jesus died because the human race is not really good at considering conseqence. It will be a battle, to be sure, and it starts not just with a reverence for life, but a reverence for all that God has given us, not just physically but spiritually as well. Faith, Hope, Love, Honesty, Trust, Graciousness, Humor, Humanity and Integrity are things that God has given us but we cannot hold them in our hands. Our problem is not simply a lack of respect for life, its a lack or respect for Ourselves...God and everything that God has given to us... That's gonna take lots of prayers and meditation to get it back. to put it even more purely than contraceptive mentalitty...its the all about me concept. It may not be things that people grasp for but pleasure as well. We as humans have a tendency to covet what other people APPEAR to have, all the while neglecting the precious treasures at home... The "contraceptive mentality" is simply a symptom of this.

This is to all my pro life friends. This is Sunday Dec 20th
Tonight at 1 am eastern time, that is 1 am Monday morning, there will be a vote in the Senate, the 1st but most crucial of cloture votes to continue the pro abortion anti life health care bill that is being forced through the Senate just before the Celebration of our Lord's birth. 60 votes are needed to end cloture. If they don't get them, the bill stops.
I am asking and begging all of you to pray today, and tonight, as much as you can, Rosaries, Divine Mercy Chaplets, fasting, and supplications to God in Heaven to turn these Senator's hearts to what is right and good in this world...Life that God gives us, and to not vote for this bill.
Ask Mary our Mother to intercede for us with her Son, Jesus to have mercy on us and to please, if it be God's will to prevent this bill from becoming law, by speaking to these Senators hearts and souls to do what is right in God's eyes. Ask God to have mercy on us, and of course, for us to have the Grace and Courage to accept whatever God's will is for us, and our Country.
God Bless all of You!

The Senate has been rushing to get this jammed down our throats before the new year. My understanding is that they'll be voting for it on Christmas Eve. As you stated, NOW is the time to make your voice heard to your Senators and Congressmen.

On top of the fact that it would cover abortions, it would also burn down our health care system in the name of "saving it".

"ObamaCare" should be rejected entirely, and both attention and support should be given to the far better, cheaper and more promising alternatives, such as the “Health Care Freedom Act” (S. 1324), the “Patients Choice Act (S.1099), or the “Empowering Patients First Act” (H.R.3400).

Is there an address in order to send a formal letter? An email is too easy to delete.

I've contributed to the Abbey and receive emails periodically--but that's the only reason I knew about what was happening. I think more bloggers should be notified to get out the word so that more folks can protest either by phone, by email or by letter. Naturally, in person would be just excellent!!

This is the comment I left on the cardinal's blog (it hasn't been published there yet):

Dear Cardinal O’Malley,

I have been pondering Pope Benedict’s words in his new encyclical “Charity in Truth”:
“To defend the truth, to articulate it with humility and conviction, and to bear witness to it in life are therefore exacting and indispensable forms of charity.”

To speak the truth is an indispensable form of charity, especially when that truth is unpopular. Our society does not want to hear that the unborn child must not be killed.

Despite whatever good he did, Senator Kennedy spent the better part of his long political career actively working for legislation that would favor abortion. That is not a judgment; it is part of the public record. He even voted in favor of partial-birth abortion, a horrendous procedure in which the baby’s brains are sucked out.
He did immense damage to the pro-life movement. Is that of any consequence in the eyes of the bishops?
While we pray in charity for his soul, it is indeed a deep scandal for the Church to imply that his record on abortion is of no consequence. I realize you were in a difficult position, but I am deeply disappointed that the overall impression given by the funeral was that it doesn’t really matter if a Catholic politician ardently supports abortion.

Who is speaking up for the millions of innocents who have been slaughtered and continue to die every day?
While Ted Kennedy had a magnificent funeral, these innocent children are thrown into dumpsters. And no one weeps.
