Understanding our “enemy”

February 11th, 2010 by Dave in Abortion, Catholic Issues, Contraception, Pro-life, United States

In order to defeat one’s enemy, one must understand them.  In order to heal a disease, we must understand what that disease is.  To most of us pro-lifers, it is nearly impossible for us to fathom what is going on in the head of someone who is “pro-choice”.

That is why this article is so very important.  The article is written by Jennifer Fulwiler, who I have mentioned before in this blog, and explains the reasons why she was pro-choice before her conversion.   To sum up a great article into three words, the reason was:  the contraceptive mentality.   This insidious mentality is behind nearly all of our sexual and family problems in the Western world today, and during Lent, I will be posting a series on how each problem is traceable back to contraception as the root.

If we are going to heal our society and once again instill a reverence for life, it will have to start with rooting out the contraceptive mentality.  As people are starting to realize the harmful effects of non-natural foods, lotions, etc., this task may not be as overwhelmingly difficult as it seems.

Sadly, tragically, it goes even beyond the contraceptive mentality. If it were that alone our battle would be an easy one, as we could simply put the health risks of such behaviors and everyone would follow. It is the abundance of misinformation out there by groups like planned parenthood who tell those considering abortion to *don’t call it a baby say mass of cells*. It is also the mentality of it feels good worry about later another time…It is the mentality of not considering consequence and it starts at childhood…Jesus died because the human race is not really good at considering conseqence. It will be a battle, to be sure, and it starts not just with a reverence for life, but a reverence for all that God has given us, not just physically but spiritually as well. Faith, Hope, Love, Honesty, Trust, Graciousness, Humor, Humanity and Integrity are things that God has given us but we cannot hold them in our hands. Our problem is not simply a lack of respect for life, its a lack or respect for Ourselves…God and everything that God has given to us… That’s gonna take lots of prayers and meditation to get it back. to put it even more purely than contraceptive mentalitty…its the all about me concept. It may not be things that people grasp for but pleasure as well. We as humans have a tendency to covet what other people APPEAR to have, all the while neglecting the precious treasures at home… The “contraceptive mentality” is simply a symptom of this.
